fingers crossed
why do I do this to myself? there’s not a huge chance of this (by this I mean a casual relationship I’m currently in) working out in the long run, yet I’m still completely falling for you.

deus ex machina
And some machines are dropped from great heights lovingly and some great bellies ache with many bumblebees (and they sting so terribly) [see previous post; Joanna Newsom - Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie] Lately I’ve been hoping for a deus ex machina in my own life. maybe one will come during this winter break; or maybe I’m oblivious to the deus ex machina already in my life....

done (for now)
Today I finished thesis. I also wrote an entire term paper and did a finance project. Go me. Although I may have finished my thesis, my adviser keeps hinting a conference next semester… so I’m sure that I will begin new work on my paper in January. I’m almost looking forward to it, though. :)

the king of carrot flowers (pt. 4?)
I’m currently blasting Neutral Milk Hotel’s classic album ‘In the Aeroplane Over The Sea’ after receiving a tweet which said that Jeff Mangum played a gig at a loft in Brooklyn. Here’s hoping for his return.

buckeyeballerina asked: Hi there,
Just stopping by to say hi - I'm Isabelle and I went to high school with the lovely AdrienneMae.
I feel your pain about graduate school. I didn't do terribly well on the GRE although I know myself to be intelligent and good at what I do. I still have not finished my applications and the first is due in 10 days.
On a slightly happier (and more random)...

hellooo
I’ve been a little light on my details, so here goes: I’m a senior studying political science and economics at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. I had aspirations to become a PhD candidate in economics, but those have been dashed because I have not taken enough calculus. Luckily I took the LSAT so I can instead stress out about law school applications. As you can tell, I’m very...

emotional catharsis
I’m listening to Sigur Ros for the first time in probably two years. Holy shit… I can’t even express how I felt when the piano came in at ‘hoppipolla’…

Aid, Accountability, Associations
Just because some of my hypotheses failed doesn’t mean I can’t make a few recommendations, right? Here’s an idea for reforming aid: transform official development assistance (ODA) from bilateral transfers of capital into investments in microfinance. Better yet, create an internationally regulated, IGO-scale microfinancial institution, fund it through ODA, and then distribute...

Calculus ≠ Economics
“Dear Patrick, Thank you for your interest in our Ph.D. program in Economics at the University of Maryland. We received 854 applications last year and we enrolled a class of 20. You need to have the minimum math requirements in order to be successful in our program.” This is the fundamental flaw with the current orthodoxy in economics. Too bad I didn’t take the necessary...
